Traditional & Renovation Builds

The Strength of Brick. The Freedom to Renovate.

Traditional brick and mortar construction remains the most widely understood and accepted building method in South Africa. It is ideal for clients who prefer conventional structures, or for sites where brick is specified by local planning requirements.

Our brick builds use SABS approved materials throughout from the concrete foundation and mortar to the plaster, roof structure and finishes. Every new brick home we construct is registered with the NHBRC and carries full structural warranty protection.

We also specialise in full-scope renovations , structural changes, room additions, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, re-roofing, and interior fit-outs. If it can be built or changed, our team can do it.

One team handles everything. You deal with one person from the first site visit to the day the job is done.

What Goes Into a Brick Build

Traditional construction done to a modern standard — every phase built to SANS compliance and NHBRC requirements.

01

Site Preparation & Foundation

We begin with a site assessment to determine soil conditions and the correct foundation type for your build. Strip, raft or pad foundations are used depending on the structural requirements. All concrete mix designs meet SANS specifications. A proper foundation is the single most important investment in any brick build.

02

Brickwork & Structural Walls

We use SABS approved clay or concrete bricks laid in running bond with properly mixed mortar. All structural walls are built to the approved plan dimensions and tied at corners and junctions. Window and door lintels are correctly sized and installed. No shortcuts in the brickwork as it determines the strength and longevity of everything above it.

03

Roof Structure & Covering

Timber roof trusses are fabricated and installed to the approved roof design. We cover with IBR sheeting, corrugated iron or concrete roof tiles depending on your preference and budget. All flashing, gutters and downpipes are correctly installed. A well-built roof keeps your walls dry, it is as important as the brickwork below it.

04

Plastering, Electrical & Plumbing

Internal and external walls are plastered to a smooth or textured finish as specified. Electrical conduits and plumbing are correctly routed and installed before plastering. All electrical work meets SANS 10142 standards and is done by certified electricians. Plumbing uses SABS approved materials throughout.

Finishes, Fittings & Handover

Tiling, painting, ceilings, cupboards, doors and windows are all completed to your specifications. We do a thorough walkthrough with you before handover and every snag is addressed before you take ownership and your home is handed over complete, clean and move-in ready.

Renovation Services

What We Renovate

From a single room update to a full structural overhaul, we handle renovations of all sizes across South Africa.

Brick home renovation by Cornerstone Construction
We add rooms, garages, entertainment areas and second storeys to existing homes and commercial buildings. Structural calculations are done correctly, tie-in points are properly engineered and the extension is finished to match the existing structure. We manage the full process.
We renovate kitchens from the ground up whether it's demolition, plumbing re-routing, electrical, new tiling, custom cupboards and countertops. We work with your existing layout or redesign the floor plan entirely. One team handles all trades so you don't have to manage multiple contractors.
Full bathroom renovations including waterproofing, tiling, new fittings, vanities, shower enclosures and plumbing work. We strip the existing bathroom completely and rebuild it to your specification. All work meets SANS standards and is done by our own plumbers and tilers.
Removing walls, creating open-plan living spaces, installing new doorways or widening existing openings. Structural changes require correct lintel sizing and wall support and this is not work to be done without proper knowledge. We assess the structure before any demolition begins and execute the changes safely and to code.
We replace aging or damaged roofing from corrugated iron and IBR sheeting to full truss replacement and tile roofing. Leaks, sagging trusses, damaged flashing and gutter problems are all addressed. A sound roof is the most important maintenance investment on any building — we do the job properly the first time.
Ceilings, tiling, laminate flooring, internal painting, cupboards, built-in wardrobes and partition walls. Whether you are refreshing an existing interior or fitting out a newly built shell, we complete the full scope in-house. No coordinating multiple trades one team, one invoice, one point of accountability.

Yes. We build traditional brick and mortar homes for residential and commercial clients across all 9 provinces. Every new brick build is NHBRC registered and uses SABS approved materials throughout.
We handle all types of renovations from room additions, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, structural changes, re-roofing, interior fit-outs, ceilings, tiling, painting and built-in cupboards. Whether it is a single room update or a full structural overhaul, our team handles it.
It depends on the scope of work. Structural changes, additions and re-roofing typically require council approval. Cosmetic work like tiling, painting and cupboards generally does not. We advise you on what is required for your specific project during the consultation.
A standard brick home takes longer to build than a Nutec or log home because of the curing time required for brickwork, plaster and concrete. A small to medium brick home typically takes 3 to 6 months from breaking ground to handover, depending on the size and complexity and unforseen circumstances. We give you a detailed timeline at the quotation stage.
Yes, in most cases. For additions and external work, occupation is usually possible throughout the project. For major structural changes or full interior renovations, temporary relocation may be practical for some phases. We discuss this with you upfront so you can plan accordingly. We work efficiently to minimise disruption wherever possible.
