What is a Log Home?

Timber Construction Done Right

A log home is built using structural timber cut to size, treated and fitted on site to your specific design. The result is a warm, natural aesthetic that suits coastal, bush and garden settings equally well. Log homes have been built across South Africa for decades and remain a popular choice for holiday retreats, rental units and permanent family homes.

We use treated structural timber on every build. Treatment protects the wood against moisture, rot, insects and UV degradation extending the lifespan of your home significantly. The right treatment for your location is selected based on your environment, whether coastal, inland or highland.

Every new log home we build can be registered with the NHBRC and complies fully with SANS building standards. Your investment is protected from the ground up.

From a small coastal cabin to a large family home, we design and build it to your brief, on your site, by our own team.

Why Log Homes

6 Reasons to Choose a Log Home

Timber construction offers a unique combination of beauty, warmth and practicality that no other building material can match.

Natural Insulation

Timber has a naturally high insulation value. Log homes stay warm in winter and cooler in summer thereby reducing your heating and cooling costs year-round.

Timeless Aesthetic

The warm, natural look of timber never goes out of style. Log homes suit coastal, bush, mountain and garden settings and they photograph beautifully.

Fast Construction

Log homes are cut to size and assembled on site efficiently. With a good team and proper planning, your home goes up quickly reducing your overall build time.

Versatile Design

From compact single-room cabins to large multi-bedroom family homes , log construction adapts to virtually any floor plan, size or design preference.

Cost Effective

Log homes are competitively priced compared to conventional construction. Treated timber is a durable, long-lasting material that gives you excellent value over the life of the building.

Treated for Longevity

We use treated timber that resists moisture, rot, UV and wood-boring insects. The correct treatment grade is chosen for your specific location whether coastal, inland or highland.

What Goes Into a Log Home

Every log home we build follows a consistent quality standard from the foundation to the final coat of sealant.

01

Foundation & Base

Every log home starts on a properly engineered concrete foundation or pole stilts. We assess the site conditions before designing the foundation to suit the soil and load requirements. A strong base is non-negotiable as it determines how your home performs for decades.

FAQs

Log Home Questions Answered

Common questions from clients before they build their log home.

A well-built log home using properly treated timber can last 30 to 50 years or more. The key factors are the quality of the timber treatment, regular external resealing every 4 to 6 years, and proper roof maintenance. Homes built in humid or coastal areas require more frequent maintenance than inland builds.
Yes with the right timber treatment and design. Log homes have been built across South Africa for decades in every climate zone. We select the treatment grade to match your environment. Coastal builds use a higher-grade moisture and salt-resistant treatment. Inland and highveld builds are treated for UV and temperature fluctuation.
22mm logs are thicker, providing better insulation and a more substantial wall. They are recommended for colder climates like the highveld and mountain regions. 16mm logs are lighter, faster to install and more cost-effective , a good choice for coastal and temperate areas where extreme insulation is less critical.
It depends on your municipality and the size of the structure. Smaller log homes on rural properties sometimes fall below the approval threshold. We advise you on the specific requirements for your site during the consultation. Where approvals are required, we assist with the submission and NHBRC registration process.
Log home pricing depends on the timber profile (16mm or 22mm), size, design and location. In Gauteng, expect R4 200–R6 500 per m² for supply and construct depending on log thickness and approval status. Western Cape and KZN are R4 400–R7 500 per m².
